1 in 8 Billion

1 in 8 Billion (1in8b) is a free life simulation that runs in the browser, and it is still in beta. You are born at random as one of the world's people and live that one life to its end, using real statistics from 172 countries. You set a focus for each year, answer decisions about school, work, love, moving abroad and medical care, and watch four meters: health, happiness, knowledge and relationships

Time can be paused or run up to 16x, a session lasts about 30 minutes, 1 hour or 1.5 hours, and at ages 5, 15, 30, 50 and 70 the game stops to ask a reflective question. It comes in 16 languages, is called 80億分の1 in Japan and 1 sur 8 milliards in France, and went viral in October 2026 with players saying it made them cry

Good fit if
you want a quiet, reflective session about an ordinary life grounded in real data
How Your Empire compares
Same frame, different seat. Your Empire also gives you a random start, one life and a look back at the end, but the life is a ruler's, on a map of 4,396 real cities, and the empires are invented rather than drawn from statistics

Reigns

Reigns is a 2016 game by Nerial, published by Devolver Digital. You rule as a king by swiping each card left or right to answer a request from a character at court. Four meters stand for the Church, the People, the Army and the money, and if any of them runs empty or full your reign ends, usually in a funny way, and a new ruler takes the throne

Reigns plays in quick rounds, and the dark humor is part of its appeal. The series has grown to include Reigns: Game of Thrones, Reigns: Her Majesty and Reigns: Beyond. It runs on phones and PC

Good fit if
you like ruler games with a joke on every card and a reign that can end quickly
How Your Empire compares
The closest cousin in tone, since both ask you to rule and both end in a death. Reigns gives you a binary choice per card and many short reigns. Your Empire gives you 2 to 6 options per event, a map of real cities and one long reign of 1 to 2 hours

Crusader Kings III

Crusader Kings III is a grand strategy game from Paradox Interactive, released in 2020. You play a ruler in a researched medieval world, with start dates of 867 or 1066, and manage land, vassals, family, schemes, war, faith and culture. Characters have traits, and when yours dies you continue as an heir, so the story is a dynasty rather than a single life

It is a deep game with many systems and menus, and a campaign can take many hours. It is sold for PC and consoles through stores such as Steam

Good fit if
you want full control over a medieval dynasty and enjoy learning many linked systems
How Your Empire compares
Crusader Kings III is far larger in scope and uses a researched medieval setting. Your Empire is smaller by design: you control nothing directly, you answer events, and one ruler's life fits in 1 to 2 hours. Its cities are real and its history is invented

You can be a feared dictator or a peace-loving statesman, and the series is known for its humor about power. It is sold for PC and consoles

Good fit if
you like building an economy and running a satirical state with your own hands
How Your Empire compares
Tropico is about placing buildings and setting policy. Your Empire has neither: the only input is your choice in an event. They share dark humor about power, and Your Empire adds a map of real cities, invented faiths and a ruler who ages and dies

Spent

Spent is a free online game made by the agency McKinney for Urban Ministries of Durham, first released in 2011. You try to get through one month on $1,000, choosing between hard options such as a job, bills and car trouble, and the game ends after 30 days or sooner if the money runs out

It is short, plain and built to show what living with little money is like. Early coverage counted more than a million plays

Good fit if
you liked the moments in 1 in 8 Billion that made you think about someone else's circumstances, in a short game
How Your Empire compares
Spent covers one month of one life with money as the central number. Your Empire covers a whole reign of 60 to 100 years with many moving parts, and it is entertainment with dark humor rather than an awareness project

Where Your Empire fits

Your Empire is a browser strategy game at yourempire.cc. You rule an invented empire on a map of 4,396 real cities, starting as a young ruler with 2 to 5 real neighboring cities. Your only input is the choice in an event, and more than 8,500 events in 23 kinds arrive 3 to 5 times a year at normal speed

It shares Reigns' idea that the choice is the whole game, and Crusader Kings III's idea that a ruler has a family, a faith and enemies, but it is its own thing: one long reign of 60 to 100 years, a papercraft map, bot empires that live without you, and a final card with an epithet when the ruler dies
