The world of Your Empire

The Earth is the board and the cities are real. Almost everything else, from the empire next door to the god your neighbors pray to, never existed

Real cities, real borders

The map is built from 4,396 real cities. Boroughs are merged into their city, so each city is counted once. Every city owns its real district or province, with its real borders as in our world, so all the land is divided and empires look like countries

The whole planet is divided among generated empires, and your game can start anywhere on it, with 2 to 5 neighboring real cities

Everything else is invented

Empires, nations, rulers and religions are generated, and so are their names, which sound like no real language. The meaning of a religion is generated too, not only its name. When an event names a ruler, a people or a god, that name was made up for your game and has never existed

No eras, only discoveries

The game never announces an Iron Age or a Gunpowder Age. There are no eras and no general names for development. People discover technologies one at a time, and a neighbor may already have gunpowder while you do not

The world starts medieval, with ships already at sea. Within one life it can reach the steam engine, factories and railways

Some of the inventions on the way

  • Crop rotation and the windmill
  • The compass and the telescope
  • The printing press and banking
  • Gunpowder and muskets
  • The steam engine, factories and railways

Technology without eras

Empires that live without you

Every other empire is ruled by a bot that lives through the same events as you. Half of its decisions are random and half are the advantageous ones, so a few empires grow into great powers on their own while others fall into pieces and new states appear

You see what your fog allows. Everything else happens anyway

A world that plays without you

Crowns, councils and committees

Countries are ruled by chieftains, kings, emperors, doges, consuls, presidents or chairmen. They start as tribes and feudal kingdoms and can become parliaments, republics, theocracies, military dictatorships, socialist states or communist states, one event at a time

Forms of government

Faiths nobody has heard of

Every religion is generated, with a name, a meaning and rules that can be odd on purpose: one faith may hold goats sacred. Prophets found new ones, schisms split old ones, and relics, pilgrims and inquisitions all find their way into your reign

Generated faiths

People who change history

Prophets, genius inventors, great generals and admirals, artists, explorers and merchant princes are born in the world by chance. One of them may found a faith, build a machine or take your throne. They are generated like everything else, and they can leave for a rival

Notable people

Drama with dark humor

Event texts are drama with a dark sense of humor. A plague and a bad idea can share a sentence. Rulers write letters that are insulting, funny or flattering, and once in a long while a legendary event shows up, made for sharing

Pick a corner of the Earth

The game picks it for you. You get the crown anyway
